The Beginning: The Walker Family Journey

Our Journey . . .
The Walker Family journey began in 2008.  We knew I was a carrier of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, or X-Linked SCIDs.  SCIDs, Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, is a primary immune deficiency. The defining characteristic is the absence of the T & B-cells.

Shawn and I were in agreement that it was God’s plan for us to have a baby.  He laid it on our hearts to trust him, especially with our son.  When we found out it was a boy, it was very emotional.  There was a 50% chance he would not have an immune system.  The doctors did not recommend testing before birth due to the risk.

Our journey took us to Duke University in North Carolina.  We arrived two weeks before my due date.  Isaac was born on December 21st.  We were in reverse isolation at the hospital for two days.  The initial tests indicated he could possibly have SCIDs, and they began preparation for a bone marrow transplant.  We did not know for 8 days the final results.  When they called with the results they said they had never seen it before, his cell count reversed.  God is good!  We were able to come home, and Isaac was healthy.

We prayed about whether we should have another child.  Again, we felt God was telling us to trust him.  We are having another boy, Nathan Lee Walker.  No matter what the outcome is, just like the meaning of his name, he will be a gift from god.

And our gift will be here any day, and we will still be rejoicing.
